Welcome to the Somerset Township, a rural farming and residential community located in the heart of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Established 1782 as the Township of Summersett, the first settlers in Somerset Township were the families of Isaac Newkirk and William Colvin in 1777.
On April 2, 1782, Somerset Township was created from parts of Fallowfield, Nottingham, Strabane, and Bethlehem Townships.
The first principal villages were Vanceville, Eighty Four, Dunningsville and Kammerer.
Today the township spreads over thirty one square miles with a population of 2684.
The road crew maintains 70 miles of township roads. They also provide winter maintenance on a portion of the 30 miles of state roads.
Fire Protection is provided by contracts with Ellsworh, Fallowfield and Valley Inn Volunteer Fire Departments.
